Writing Descriptive Essays

Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in  Essay writing guide by Editor | 1 Comment

There are many types of essays that can be written in various functions. These types of written projects depend mainly on how the contents influence the readers. One of these essays is called a descriptive essay. They are among the most crucial school requirements which allow you to delve in numerous subject matters and provide some characteristics of the things involved in the written article. This type of assignment makes it possible for you to give some more details about a particular topic which naturally has no meaning or insignificant to other people. Your ability to describe the subject interest will be the primary goal in writing this kind of coursework.

There are many things which you first need to understand in writing a descriptive essay. The first part involves the selection of the appropriate idea based on how you perceive a certain thing, event, people or scenario. To write essay of this type needs a balanced representation of things according to how you look at matters. For example, you may think that a history essay can be a boring topic. However, you will be able to capture a vivid description process in identifying significant events which then will also get the attention of your readers. The detailed description of the facts and figures about such articles can make it a very interesting subject to be written about.

Just like any other types of essays, the descriptive kind also needs to have the same structure of ordinary articles. How do you write the essay introduction, how you compose the body and how you end the article by a conclusion are all the same concerns in completing a written work. You can look for some more ideas on the internet if you think you lack the ability to come up with a quality output perfecting the three parts of the project. This will assure you of a more dynamic writing and increase in confidence to input your thoughts within the file.

One aspect which is very important in writing a descriptive essay is the use of reliable resource materials. Since you are going to provide the descriptions of your topic interest, it is necessary that you incorporate accepted facts from other works which already gained credibility. To work on an essay format of this type can be very tedious especially if you are going to write about things which are very technical. Some of the most common fields of interest with this criterion are biology, physics, chemistry, medicine and mathematical topics. Since they are highly technical in terms of piece by piece measured parts of discussion, you will need to get a number of resources to support whatever descriptive analyses you want to tackle about.

Increasing your chances of submitting a quality written article does not readily depend on your writing skills. You will also need to come up with a good background reliability check of the materials you will use in writing. Moreover, it also crucial to facilitate the use of writing techniques to make sure that you only deliver the very best out of your talent.

Essay on Man—the Philosophical Approach

Wednesday, October 24, 2007 in  How to write a coursework by Alex | No Comments

The essay on man can be both a challenging assignment and the most banal, depending on how you approach it. The angles with which to view it could be manifold, and this would determine your handling of the subject. The crucial concerns here would be how you approach the concept of “man,” and which aspects you would like to focus on. Various writers have written essays on this subject, and these throw up some fascinating ideas. Most famous among these are the ones written by Alexander Pope and centuries later, by Mark Twain.
One of the most famous is Essay on Man, a poem by Alexander Pope. This is like a philosophical treatise explaining God and His methods of working to Man. The contemporary controversy around this poem centered on the fact that Pope tried to show how Man was not the center of the universe as people were wont to believe in the early 18th century. As David Cody, of Hartwick College puts it, the poem tries to affirm faith in God by showing how, “life seems chaotic and patternless to man when he is in the midst of it, but is in fact a coherent portion of a divinely ordered plan” (Para 4, The Victorian Web).
Mark Twain’s excellent essay What is Man explores the “make” of man as an engine that is made, propelled, and run by outside influences. It is a compelling discussion between an old and a young man on whether man is a creature in control of the self, changing and altering himself, or whether he is only externally influenced and thus made and remade many times over. The paradigm is that of an engine made from material by an external hand, in which the machine or the materials used have no independent role to play. The young man’s incredulity mirrors our own as we read through Twain’s discussion, and the idea gradually begins to dawn that man is a creature of his circumstances.
These essays raise important questions of their time, more so in the case of Pope than Twain. By Twain’s time, the church was not as supreme an entity as during Pope’s, when to question the Church and its diktats was to question God Himself. Man’s position in the universe was not questioned, yet Pope did so, in his own inimitable style. Twain has a more tongue-in-cheek and ironical style of questioning the Ego. Both the essays force you to think on the position of man in the universe, in society, and with himself/herself. And here, we refer to man as “human beings,” not a gender specific entity.
The essay on man is a difficult subject to deal with when you approach it philosophically. Other and more mundane approaches and essays exist, but these do not raise the issues and concerns that have helped in the development of mankind. It is the philosophical approach to man that has helped us confront ourselves and learn about the ego and the human condition.

How to work on Essay Format

Monday, October 22, 2007 in  Essay writing guide by Alan | No Comments

All essays have a format, sometimes determined by their topic, sometimes by specific instructions given by instructors, but the basic essay format remains the same. This format is linear, taking the piece of writing from one point to another through logically connected sentences and ideas. The basic essay format follows the five part formula: Introduction, three body paragraphs, and the conclusion.

The introduction actually introduces the subject to readers. A subject will have various aspects, but the writer may be focusing on only one or two aspects, and the introduction sets the tone for these aspects. It tells readers what the subject is about, provides the context in which subject is posited, and leads to the thesis statement that captures the essay’s focus. Therefore, internally, the introduction proceeds from general points related to the subject to specific points, ending in a thesis statement that is completely focused and specific.

The thesis statement follows a particular format. You refer to the subject, present your assertion about the subject, and support the assertion with logical reasons. If you had to describe your pet dog, you could write the thesis thus: “My pet dog is a lovable creature because of its appealing looks, loyal nature, and playful antics.” The subject: pet dog; the assertion: lovable creature; reasons supporting the assertion: looks, nature, antics. The paragraphs will address each of the reasons.

The body paragraphs deal with specific points related to the subject and its discussion. Each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that reflects the paragraph’s focus. While the thesis reflects the essay’s central idea, the topic sentences present the main idea of each paragraph. The paragraphs are structured in the point-explanation-example format. You state a point, explain it thoroughly, and followed up with appropriate examples. If you were to say that your dog’s appealing looks make him lovable, you want to explain what you mean by appealing looks. Does he have limpid eyes or a lovely coat? Does the shape of his head appeal to you? Now follow it up with examples of his being lovable because of his looks.

The body paragraphs lead to the conclusion. While the introduction gives rise to the paragraphs, the conclusion arises out of these paragraphs. The conclusion is formatted to proceed from specific to general details. You begin with a summary of the main points you discuss in the body of the paper. You then proceed to reemphasize the thesis and your assertions as proved in the main paragraphs. However, beware! You do not want to mention anything new in this section. You also do not want to reach conclusions that are not explored in the body paragraphs. You cannot afford to contradict what you have discussed earlier. This will make the paper fall apart.

Essay format is an important element of a paper because a structured paper helps readability and appeals to evaluators. It helps you move in a logical manner among connected points, thus avoiding vagueness and incompleteness. You may find more useful tips on how to write business and history essays.

How to Write the Descriptive Essay

Friday, October 19, 2007 in  Essay writing guide by Alan | No Comments

A description sketches a picture in words. In a descriptive essay, you portray a thing, person, place, feeling, or an event. To do so, you need to use expressive language and concrete examples. It is often personal, since you would explain something as you view it. However, if you were to describe a cat or any other animal, you would combine the universal representations with your own perception of a cat. So, you could say a cat is a feline, four legged creature, and also add your own ideas about the cat, such as it is disloyal, or that it is cunning, or that it is greedy, depending on how you view the animal. This biology essay type requires you to describe the subject with a blend of the universal and peculiar and with examples that help the reader get a clear picture of the ideas used in the description.
Painting the subject is heavily dependent on words and the structure of the paper. Words used are mainly adjectival, since they help describe qualities, features, and attributes. It is important to use appropriate and specific words that highlight the quality you focus on.

  • Example: To describe a house, you would need to use words like spacious, colorful, comfortable, and such others that refer to its specific characteristics.

The essay structure follows the standard format.
I. Introduction: This will follow the general-to-specific format—general ideas pertaining to the subject and on to specific points (see also how to write an essay introduction).

  • Example: In order to portray your house, you could begin with ideas about houses in general and what they mean to their inhabitants, move on to the importance of having a house, and various types of houses. This will lead you directly to the specific house you want to describe. End the introduction with a thesis statement.

II. Thesis statement: This reflects the essay’s focus and determines its content and structure. It usually refers to the subject + the writer’s assertion about it + and reasons for the assertion. A descriptive thesis could be more expansive than other thesis statements.

  • Example: “My house is a sprawling structure with lavishly laid out gardens, a scenic location, and aesthetically decorated rooms.” This thesis lays out all the pointers.

III. Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph will address specific pointers in the thesis statement and support it with examples. For example, when you write that the rooms are aesthetically decorated, you will not only explain the idea but also give an example of one or more rooms thus decorated.
IV. Conclusion: This is essentially a summary of the main points. In this section, you will also need to emphasize the thesis. In addition, you could give the reader something to chew upon: how such a house affects your life, what it means for you, and other such relevant details.
The descriptive essay is thus a well laid out compilation of various qualities and features of a subject and creates a word-picture for readers. We hope that the article will help you to write a good essay.

How do you Write the Essay Introduction

Thursday, October 18, 2007 in  Essay writing guide by Alan | No Comments

All assignement essay, like human beings, have a face; in the case of the essay, it is called the introduction. It plays an important part in the document. It is the reader’s first look into the subject and what the writer intends to do with it. It provides a peep into the subject and its relevant aspects and helps keep the reader and writer focused. The introduction familiarizes the reader with the subject, its nuances, and how the writer wants to discuss it.
The introduction has various functions:

  1. Make a strong opening impact on the reader
  2. Make readers aware of the subject
  3. Give an idea of what the writer plans to say about the subject
  4. Lead to the thesis statement.
  5. The introduction could begin with an example, an anecdote, a piece of data, or a striking fact that catches the readers’ attention. This should be directly related to the subject and make a strong comment on it. For example, an essay on methamphetamine could begin with a startling statistic on the abuse of this substance. You could also begin with an example that captures the essence of what methamphetamine does to people who use it. However you begin the essay, you want to ensure that it is relevant to your ultimate focus and does not mislead the reader.
  6. After this, you want to familiarize your audience with the subject. So, you could give some background to meth and its use in the country, state the basic problems associated with it, and let readers know its significance as a subject for discussion. What is meth? When did people first start using it? What is it made of? Why is it dangerous?
  7. How do you want to discuss this subject in the paper? Which aspects will you explore? How will you do so?
  8. The above details will slowly lead you to the thesis statement. It appears near or at the end of the introduction paragraph. It provides details that gradually move towards an assertion that forms the focus of the essay. Without the thesis, the introduction is incomplete.

The introduction to an essay should be written in such a manner that readers feel interested in the rest of the paper. It should also be well balanced in length. If your paper is 10 pages long, your introduction cannot be one-paragraph long. Similarly, if the paper is two pages long, your introduction cannot be longer than one short paragraph. In a paragraph long essay, on the other hand, the introduction appears after the thesis sentence and is usually one to three sentences long depending on the paragraph’s length.
Writers often tend to forget the importance of the essay introduction. As the opening frame paragraph, it familiarizes the reader with the subject and helps her relate to the discussion in a more informed manner. Without a good introduction, the essay could collapse since it helps to maintain focus and keep the writer on track.
