How to Work on Essay Format

Friday, November 23, 2007 in  How to write a coursework by Custom Essays | No Comments

Essay FormatAll essays have a format, sometimes determined by their topic, sometimes by the specific instructions given by the teachers, but the basic essay format remains the same. Since this format is linear, it takes the piece of writing from one point to another through logically connected sentences and ideas. Generally speaking, the basic essay format follows the five part formula: introduction, three body paragraphs, and the conclusion.

Essentials of Essay Introduction

The introduction actually presents the subject to the target audience. Although a subject has various aspects, the writer should focus only on one or two aspects. Speaking more in details, the essay introduction informs the readers about the subject, provides the context in which subject is posited, and leads to the thesis statement that captures the essay’s focus. Therefore, internally, the introduction proceeds from general points related to the subject to the specific ones, ending in a brief and logical thesis statement.

Thesis Statement Format

Traditionally, the thesis statement follows a particular format. Actually, you should refer to the subject, present your assertion about it, and support this assertion with the strong arguments. If you had to describe your pet dog, you could write the following thesis: “My pet dog is a lovable creature because of its appealing looks, loyal nature, and playful antics.” The subject: pet dog; the assertion: lovable creature; the arguments: looks, nature, antics. In such a way, your next paragraphs should address each of these reasons.

Peculiarities of the Effective Body Paragraphs

Usually, the body paragraphs deal with the specific details related to the subject and its discussion. Each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that reflects the focus of the whole paragraph. While the thesis reveals the essay’s central idea, the topic sentences present the main subject of each paragraph. All paragraphs are structured in the point-explanation-example format. This means that you state a point, explain it fully, and support it with the appropriate examples. If you were to say that your dog’s appealing looks make him lovable, you would like to clarify what you mean by “appealing looks”. Does he have limpid eyes or a lovely coat? Does the shape of his head appeal to you? Now follow it up with examples of his being lovable status.

Mastering Your Essay Conclusion

It is clear that the body paragraphs lead to the conclusion. While the introduction gives rise to the paragraphs, the conclusion arises out of these paragraphs. The conclusion is formatted to proceed from specific to general details. You begin with a summary of the main points you discuss in the body of the paper and then proceed to reemphasize the thesis and your assertions mentioned in the body paragraphs. However, beware! You should not communicate anything new in this section. As well, you should not offer some new conclusions that are not explored in the body of your paper. Besides, you cannot contradict all ideas discussed in the paper, as this is going to make your essay fall apart.

To conclude, essay format is an important element of each research. It is a well-known fact that a good structured paper assists readability and appeals to evaluators. Surely, it helps the reader move in a logical manner among the connected points, thus avoiding vagueness and incompleteness.
